Kraken beat the `big, bad Bruins- again

Image
Against the Minnesota Wild last weekend, the Seattle Kraken scored 36 seconds into the game, but the Wild went on to post a dominant 5-2 victory. Tuesday night at Climate Pledge Arena, the visiting Boston Bruins outshot the Kraken, 9-1, in the opening minutes of the game but Seattle went on to post a 4-3 overtime victory. “We know we can play with these teams,” said Kraken coach Dave Hakstol when it was noted that the Kraken have beaten the top two point-getters (Vancouver and Boston) on their most recent homestand. “Points are what’s important now.” Unfortunately for the Kraken, the resurgent Nashville Predators posted another victory Wednesday night, their sixth in a row, and Seattle’s now six points behind the Predators for the final Western Conference playoff berth. Seattle’s 11 th overall in the conference and would have to leapfrog St. Louis, Minnesota and Calgary for a playoff berth as well. However, there was plenty to be pleased about on Wednesday night as the Kraken ha...

Kraken fall in playoff hunt

Image
In a game that could be considered a must-win, the Seattle Kraken were shutdown by the Minnesota Wild, 5-2, last night at Climate Pledge Arena. The loss drops the Kraken (24-22-11) to five points behind Nashville for the eighth and final playoff berth in the Western Conference. More dire news for the Kraken – they drop to 12 th overall in the conference, meaning they have to climb over four teams in their final 25 games to earn a playoff berth. "I don't think we should be frustrated, I think we should be pretty upset with ourselves," said Coach Dave Hakstol. "There are moments in the game that are game-changing moments that two nights ago (Thursday's 5-2 win over the Canucks) we met every one of those moments. Tonight, we didn't meet many of them." Things actually couldn't have started much better for the Kraken. Vince Dunn fired home his 10th goal of the season merely 36 seconds into the game, beating future Hall-of-Famer Marc-Andre Fleury, who...

Kraken back in playoff hunt

Image
Play Video   The calendar says that there are almost two months remaining in the NHL regular season, but the Seattle Kraken are already in playoff mode. Heading into last night’s showdown with the Pacific Division leading Vancouver Canucks, Seattle found itself trailing three teams for the final playoff berth in the Western Conference. A disastrous homestand (a six-gamer against playoff contenders) that began Monday against the Detroit Red Wings would all but thwart Seattle’s chances of returning to the Stanley Cup playoffs. But the Kraken turned in one of their most solid efforts of the season, a 5-2 win over their northern neighbors last night at Climate Pledge Arena. “But I still think we have another level,” said Kraken forward Jordan Eberle (two goals) who’s been mentioned in trade rumors. “I think we got to it tonight, and that’s kind of the standard for us. So, we need to find a way to get to that consistently each night. And if we do that down the stretch and f...

Another OT loss for Kraken

Image
Play Video The Seattle Kraken had a golden opportunity to pick up two points on the St. Louis Blues yesterday afternoon in the tight Western Conference playoff race, but had to settle for only one as defenseman Ben Cheriot scored an overtime game-winner to give the Detroit Red Wings a 4-3 matinee victory over the Kraken. The Kraken showed resiliency as they rallied three different times to tie the game. Seattle moves to 23-21-11 on the season, tied for second in the league with the Boston Bruins in overtime losses. As Seattle netminder Joey Daccord noted recently on the Spittin’ Chiclets podcast, if the Kraken had won half of those games, they’d be in a playoff spot. Seattle’s three-points behind the Blues (who lost to Toronto yesterday afternoon) but also have to hopscotch over the Nashville Predators and Minnesota Wild who are one point ahead of the Kraken. “The last three games have put us in the right direction,” said Jared McCann, acknowledging Kraken...

'Boston Boys' have successful homecoming

Image
Contrary to the old adage, the Seattle Kraken’s Matty Beniers and Joey Daccord did `go home again’ last night and it turned out to be a very successful evening. With family members in the stands, Beniers tallied three points and Daccord stopped 36 out of 37 shots as the Kraken defeated their former `home team,’ the Boston Bruins, 4-1 last night at TD Gardens. The Kraken remain consistently inconsistent. After lackluster efforts against the Philadelphia Flyers and New Jersey Devils after the All-Star break, the Kraken have posted road wins over the New York Islanders and the Bruins to climb back into the playoff hunt. Seattle improves to 23-21-10 on the season and have inched their way back into the playoff hunt. The Kraken are tied for ninth (the top eight teams make the playoffs) in the Western Conference. Unfortunately, the Nashville Predators, who like Seattle have 56 points, have four more wins. “It was great to see Matty flying around,” said Benier’s linemate Jordan Eberle...

Would Kraken Be Better Off Missing The Playoffs

Image
Will Pierre-Edouard Bellemare (above) be traded by the Seattle Kraken before the Mar. 8 trade deadline. The Seattle Kraken started the post All-Star break the same way they finished it, with a 3-2 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday night. With the St. Louis Blues- currently the final playoff team in the Western Conference- on fire (3-0 since the break, 7-3-0 in their last ten game) the Kraken enter tonight’s game with the New Jersey Devils, six points out of the playoffs. The Kraken have three road games in four nights against the Devils, the New York Islanders (Tuesday) and the Boston Bruins (Thursday). Seattle desperately needs to start winning some games if they hope to make post-season play for the second consecutive year. With the Kraken’s lackluster play, local hockey media’s thoughts drift not to romance and Valentine’s Day, but to the March 8 trade deadline. In their maiden season, the Kraken were sellers at the deadline with general manager Ron Francis turning expa...

Kraken head into the home stretch

Image
It’s down to the homestretch for the Seattle Kraken. Seattle’s NHL entry has an extended layoff after the NHL All-Star break taking to the ice for the first time in 11 days when they travel to Philadelphia to face the Flyers (are they the Broad Street Bullies anymore?) on Saturday night. The Kraken will arrive in the City of Brotherly Love with a 21-19-10 record, placing them fifth in the Pacific Division and 10th in the Western Conference with 52 standings points. The top eight teams from the Pacific and Central Divisions represent the Western Conference in the playoffs. The St. Louis Blues and the Nashville Predators from the Central Division currently have 54 points, with the Blues (26-21-2) earning the final playoff nod over the Predators (26-23-1). The Predators were one of the teams the Kraken battled for a playoff berth last season. “The fact is we’ve dug ourselves out of a huge hole the past 23 games,” said Kraken coach Dave Hakstol in a FOX13 interview. “And now we control o...
