Kraken post OT victory over Wings, 5-4

After a homestand that featured some good, some bad and a whole lotta ugly, the Seattle Kraken took to the road and bested the Detroit Red Wings, 5-4, at Little Caesars Arena. Jordan Eberle notched the game winner, his first of the season off a pass from linemate Jared McCann with only four seconds remaining in the overtime frame..

Seattle improves its record to 2-4-1 on the season and halts a five-game winning streak by the resurgent Wings. The Kraken defeated Detroit by an identical 5-4 overtime score in their last trip to the Motor City last February. Oliver Bjorkstrand tallied the game winner in that contest. McCann and Jaden Schwartz had goals in both games with Schwartz earning scoring number one star of the game honors with two goals. Seattle has never lost a game in regulation to the Red Wings, 3-0-1 overall.

“I don’t know if we’ve been consistent (enough) this season,” said Schwartz. “Today I think we did a better job; bending a little bit, but getting back after it.”

Vince Dunn, with two more assists last night (six on the season) set up the game winner. After Detroit’s Dylan Raymond hit the top crossbar, Dunn brought the puck out of his zone and hit Eberle breaking down the right wing. Eberle’s first shot was stopped by Wings’ netminder Ville Husso but two Detroit defenders got tangled up along the boards. McCann controlled the rebound to the left of the net and then slid a pass across to an open Eberle in the slot who lofted a shot into the net..

After Joe Velino opened the scoring for Detroit, Schwartz scored two consecutive goals, the first on the power play. A little over a minute after Schwartz’s second marker, Tye Kartye off a pass from defenseman Brian Dumoulin, scored on a breakaway.

But as their want this season, the Kraken never made things easy on themselves. The Red Wings responded with three power plays in the third period to take a 4-3 lead. Three of their top players- defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere, captain Dylan Larkin and newcomer Alex DeBrincat recorded the goals. Two of the power play goals came with Devin Shore- making his Seattle debut- sitting out a double minor for high sticking. Shore, replacing the injured Andre Burakovsky in the Kraken lineup, caught Christian Fischer with an errant stick resulting in a cut on Fischer’s nose.

However, the Kraken would get one more chance on a power play. Larkin was called for hooking and Seattle pulled goalkeeper Joey Daccord, giving the Kraken a two-man advantage. Matty Beniers wheeled around the back of the net and hit McCann in the left circle. As he did several times last season, McCann fired a shot home from that spot, sending the game into overtime.

“It’s important to get results,” said Kraken coach Dave Hakstol. “We played a real good two periods. Our special teams did a really good job. Then there was a wave of power plays in the third period and (Detroit) has been rolling on the power play.

“We’ve pushed back a few times this season,” said Hakstol. “We haven’t got rattled when we gave up a lead. The guys battled back. This was a good two points for us.”

Seattle continues a four-game road trip tomorrow when they travel to Carolina to face the Hurricanes. The Kraken’s first win of the season came against the Hurricanes last week at Climate Pledge Arena
