Flames burn Kraken in overtime
The Seattle
Kraken had the opportunity to play the spoiler against a Calgary Flames’ team
that’s desperately battling for a playoff berth last night at the Saddledome.
They weren’t quite successful, but the Kraken did pick up a standings’ point in
a hectic, 4-3 overtime loss.
While the
Kraken are playing for pride and individual honors, the Flames needed a victory
last night to keep pace with the St. Louis Blues, who defeated the Montreal
Canadiens, 6-1. The Flames (34-25-11) still trail the Blues (38-28-7) by four
points for the final Western Conference playoff berth.
The Flames recorded
the game winner at 2:52 of overtime. Calgary showed why the 3-on-3 overtime
format generates more offense. Vince Dunn took a pass from Jordan Eberle but
his shot was kicked out by Duston Wolf, the California native who’s a leading
candidate for NHL Rookie-of-the Year.
The puck came out to Calgary’s Matt Coronoto who sent Nazim Kadri ahead on a breakaway with no Kraken in sight. Kadri beat Joey Daccord on the short side and the Saddledome erupted as Calgary’s win kept them four points behind St. Louis. The Flames have beaten the Kraken in overtime three times this season.
Ironically, it appeared that Kadri was done for the night when he and Seattle's Brandon Montour received five-minute fighting penalties with three minutes remaining in the game. The
loss marked the first Kraken defeat of the season where they held a lead heading
into the final period (previously they were 16-0 when leading with 20 minutes
remaining).
The Kraken
took a 2-1 lead into the third period, but two goals – Kadri on the power play and a Rasmus Andersson's go-ahead tally- gave Calgary a 3-2 lead. But Eberle tied
the game at 18:30.
With Daccord
pulled for an extra attacker, Seattle was pressing in front of the net when
Jaden Schwartz slid a pass across to Eberle, and the Kraken captain fired the
puck home. Kaapo Kakko didn’t get an assist on the goal, but worked to keep the
puck in Seattle’s offensive zone prior to the score.
“I liked our
fight back,” said Eberle. “We came in overtime, we have a great look to win it,
and a great save the other way. I like the way that we skated and competed.
Obviously, we might want a couple of plays back, but it's hockey. They're
fighting for their lives. I like the way we played.”
After Adam
Klapa gave the Flames a 1-0 first period lead, the Kraken tied the game on Schwartz’s
power-play goal. Schwartz scored off a wrist shot off a scramble in front of the
net. Prior to Schwartz’s goal, Wolf had big saves on Mikey Eyssimont and
Brandon Montour earlier in the game.
`` I thought
the power play did a good job of stepping up and getting the goal to get us
back to even,” said Kraken coach Dan Bylsma. “We knew it was going to be a
competitive, desperate team over there. Overall, the game had a pretty good
feel to it.”
The Kraken
would take a 2-1 lead before the second intermission when Tye Kartye scored on
a breakaway off a lead pass from Vince Dunn. Seattle’s fourth line of Kartye-Eyssimont-John
Hayden had another strong game for the Kraken.
The Kraken
return to Climate Pledge Arena tomorrow for their final homestand of the season.
Seattle hosts the Edmonton Oilers followed by two games with the Dallas Stars.
Seattle has one more home game on April 12 versus the Chicago Blackhawks,
