Kraken winning streak ends

The Seattle Kraken saw their modest three-game winning streak come to an end last night as the Utah Hockey Club set a team record seven goals to post a 7-1 victory. This, of course, is the first year that the former Phoenix Coyotes have played in Salt Lake City under their new name.

If the Kraken were due for a clinker this was the night as their plane arrived in Salt Lake at three in the morning after a game with Los Angeles the previous night and Philipp Grubauer, expected to start was a late scratch, apparently due to a flu bug which is going through the team.

Seattle (34-39-6) overall, finishes the season with having never won the second game of a back-to-back (two nights in a row) all season. They posted an impressive 2-1 victory over the playoff-bound Kings thanks to first period goals from Matty Beniers and Brandon Montour.

Joey Daccord starting in net for the Kraken for the second consecutive night, kept the Kraken in the game for much of the first period. Utah did take a 1-0 lead when Mikhail Sergachev fired a shot through a screen at 2:44.

The Kraken were on a power play late in the first when Montour was called for interference. A mere eight seconds later, Jamie Oleksiak picked up a four-minute high sticking penalty against former Kraken and Spokane native, Kailer Yamamoto.

While the Kraken killed a five-on-three the previous night that wasn’t the case this time as Clayton Keller and Yamamoto added PPG before the end of the period.

The second period was all downhill as Lawson Crouse, Logan Cooley, Nick Schmaltz and Michael Carcone all lit the lamp to give UHC a 7-0 lead.

“That can't keep happening, especially against a good power play like they have, and especially in a back-to-back game,’’ said Kraken coach Dan Bylsma of his teams’ four first period penalties. ``You can't give them those opportunities. Obviously, not an ideal scenario.’’

The third period saw Jared McCann score the loan Kraken goal (23 seconds in) and the NHL debut of Victor Osman, who didn’t allow a goal on 12 shots. Osman’s the third goalie to make his NHL debut with the Kraken this season. Ales Stezka and Niklas Kokko were briefly recalled from Coachella Valley earlier this season while Osman has mostly played with the Kansas City Mavericks of the East Coast Hockey League

“You can't give a team like that that many chances on the power play,” said McCann, who scored his 21st goal of the season. “They're gonna make you pay. Obviously, we didn't do the job tonight. It was a tough back-to-back.’’

The Kraken play their final road game of the season tomorrow night against the Vegas Golden Knights. They have two remaining home games- Apr. 12 versus St. Louis and Apr. 15 against Los Angeles.
