Old friends lead Rangers past Kraken

The Seattle Kraken would have liked a going-away victory in their last home game before heading to Finland for a two-game set with the Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes.

Instead, the Kraken had to settle for winning the final period, but it was hardly enough. Seattle notched three unanswered third period goals in yesterday’s afternoon tilt with the New York Rangers but the visitors took a 4-0 lead in the final frame.

New York, a good home team but mediocre road team, at least until yesterday (they’re now 2-5-1 on the road) held on for a 4-3 victory. The Kraken drop to 9-6-1 on the campaign before heading overseas. The Rangers are 10-7-1.

The Kraken made things interesting with third period scorers from Kaapo Kakko, facing his old teammates, Jordan Eberle and Vince Dunn. Dunn’s score- on a drive from the point- came with just under five minutes remaining in the contest. But a questionable penalty against Seattle, hampered any chance of a comeback.,

“We had a pushback,” said Eberle.. “We had an uphill battle to climb going into the third and I liked the battle back. At the end of the day, we don’t get any points out of it [a regulation loss], so it’s frustrating.”

“I didn't like a couple of the (Ranger) goals,” said Seattle coach Lane Lambert. “It's really hard for our hockey team to chase games, and we needed to do something to change the momentum.”

Joey Daccord had a rough first period allowing three goals (a fourth potential NY goal was disallowed as officials ruled it was kicked into the net). Daccord, who allowed only one goal in 25 shots against Calgary on Thursday night) hasn’t played as well this season as the previous two campaigns with a goals against average below .900.

Joonas Korpisalo made his NHL season debut for the Rangers stopping 25 of 28 shots. Korpisalo was expected to backup Igor Shesterkin in the New York net, but was injured to start the season. Korpisalo, who spent the last two seasons in Boston, had been rehabbing with the Rangers’ AHL affiliate in Hartford. Shesterkin’s now done for the season with a knee injury

New York opened the scoring only 1:35 into the contest. Gabe Perrault took a pass from Mika Zbanejad behind the net and fired the shot home. The Rangers made it 2-0 when former Kraken Tye Kartye tapped home a shot from in front of the net, a power-play goal and his sixth of the season. Paval Dorofeyev added another score in the second period.

KRAKEN NOTES…The Kraken headed to Finland right after yesterday’s game. Along with Kakko, recently recalled Jani Nyman will be returning to his home country, and Coachella Valley goalie Nikke Kakko, a native Finn, has also been recalled, and will make the trip…Former Krakens Eeli Tolvanen and Tye Kartye were introduced during play stoppages and both received a warm hand as the scoreboard showed highlights of their three seasons in Seattle. Oliver Bjorkstrand, another former Kraken, assisted on Kartye’s goal but he was `welcomed back’ last season when he played for the Tampa Bay Lightning…The Kraken play Thursday and Saturday in Finland.
